I wanted to share some more music with you guys. This is a little ditty I’ve been working on for awhile. I hate feeling like a trendhopper (although you will NEVER hear me using Autotune, except if you call my voicemail ) but this tune has definetly got a bit of a dubstep influence. I’ve been big on Burial and Skream and all the more mainstream acts for a year or so. So this is me and my buddy/producer D’s attempt at reworking that formula. My flow is a bit more aggressive on this track, but trust me, the music calls for it. This is the version going on The Reawakening Mixtape, which has an OFFICIAL release date of April 11th. This date is GOOD AS GOLD! Trust. This song will also be on Artificial Product, but it will have a different sound that will be easily noticable. Oh the joys of creating music and being anal retentive (Im a grown man, so fuck your “no homo”). Hope you dig it. Feedback, as always, is gladly welcomed.

1) Although I change my mind like once a day, odds are good I’m gonna be putting out a mixtape relatively soon. Like mid March. Still working on titles and all that, but its gonna be a nice holdover till the album drops. Production from a few of my good friends and a few industry tracks. (Warning: I’ve been obessing over old Neptunes beats lately, so expect a couple of them to show up. Also, I’m interested in suggestions for instrumentals. Anything you lovely people have in mind lemme know. I prefer faster/electro stuff, but I feel the need to flex my lyrical hip-hop muscle lately.)

2) Debating about the album right now, as far as title and concept. Now I’m not making an actual concept album, as that rarely works out in album form. But I still want all the songs to tie together thematically, and not be some hodgepodge collection of songs that don’t have shit to do with each other. Theres the Marilyn Monroe theme I had going on, but theres also one about women in general, and one idea I have based on a Radiohead song. GOD I HATE MY BRAIN.

3) Still working as a god damn janitor. Shit is still pretty weak, but its regular pay and I still have my evenings. I finally have a steady job and I still fucking hate it. I’m not cut out for this “working everyday shit.”

4) Currently listening to music I normally would not touch with a ten foot pole. Things I’ve learned: Ska music is def not for me, I secretly think the Black Eyed Peas might be one of the greatest rap groups ever (to be discussed later), I actually REALLY like Bob Dylan, and acoustic music has to have really interesting lyrics to hold my attention. Guess those last two could be tied together.

5) Deciding that I’m going to work more on word of mouth promotion more than this internet shit. Granted, the reach with these lovely internets is amazing. I have fans in places I’ve never been to. But I want my fan base to grow pyramid style. One friend tells two friends, so on and so forth. I think thats probably the best way to build a long lasting fan base. I am, however, exploring the idea of hiring a PR firm. More on that once I know more.

6) This post pretty much signifies my remergence from my self-imposed hibernation. If you haven’t heard from me or seen me in awhile, expect that to change. If you’re throwing an event and I’m not working, I’ll be the tall black dude in the back with a PBR or substitute cheap ass beer. Networking and such. Time to whore myself out like never before. Throwing myself at this dream I’ve had for awhile now. YAY!

1. I’m extremely shy. I counteract this by being OVER-outgoing, but it hurts.

2. As a child, I fed my Nintendo eggs and grits. Its mouth was open all the time, so I assumed it was hungry.

4. I have OCD but only about certain things. When I write, it has to be well structured. And my iTunes is absolutely flawless. I’ve deleted albums because I couldn’t find the cover.

6. I have a strange love for really bad pop culture. Really bad movies are amazing to me. And as far as music, I think that explains my obsession with Gucci Mane.

7. I secretly envy hipster glasses. Like the chunky frames? I wish I didnt have 20/20 vision.

8. I cant live with out consuming at least a liter of soda a day. My kidneys should shut down production around the time I’m 35.

9. This isnt really random, but this is as good a time as any to clear up the idea I am or have ever been a whore. I’ve never had a one-night stand. EVER. (Also, depends on your definition of one night stand.)

10. My family owned 10 dogs from my birth till I was about 8. Never all at once tho. And now, I hate animals.

11. I really dont like my music, ever. Like sometimes I stumble on a good idea, but the execution is always poor to me. I think there’s talent in me somewhere, but it has yet to surface.

16. I obsess over “best of” lists and album reviews. I check Pitchfork at least 10 times a day and buy every music magazine whenever I have the money.

17. My obsession with pop culture is two-fold. One, because I am an empty soul who’s life is validated by the fact I have better taste in music than you. Two, because it’s great talking points with anyone between the ages of 13-30.

18. As much as I say I dont listen to hip-hop, that’s pretty much a giant lie. I listen to alot of hip-hop. The problem lies in the fact that I only need to listen to it once to remind myself WHY I hate 90% of the new rap music.

19. I have serious “father” issues, hence why I tend to have so many female friends.

20. I often wish I was blessed with a singing voice. Like Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Issac Hayes-style singing voice. Just seems like it would be fun.

22. I really want to live in London. Granted, I’ve never been and would love to visit first. But it just seems like such an amazing place to be. Except the lack of sunshine.

I never really was into this bands early work. I remember catching a glimpse of a black and white video from I Am a Bird or whatever that album was called. It was just some band I’d heard mentioned. Then I heard Hercules & Love Affair’s album (“Blind” seemed to be everyone’s favorite song, I personally preferred “You Belong”) and this voice over these fantastic dance tracks stuck in my head.  So being the obsessive music nerd that I am, I immediately searched who the vocalist was.  Turns out it was Anthony Hegarty. The only way to describe his voice was, otherworldly (most generic phrase ever) or “a black woman’s voice as morphed by a little Englishman” (as descriptive as it gets).  Normally I don’t go for music that slower paced. But the arrangements around Antony’s voice are perfectly fitted for him to show his amazing range and talent. To be perfectly honest, I really dont care who the Johnsons are, as whatever their contribution is to this record pales when compared to THAT voice. Its become my “fall asleep to” album of choice. Serious, enough hyperbole. Just D/L it and enjoy.

Have fun increasing your music collections!

How is 2009 treating everyone so far? I figured since more than likely everyone in the Chicago area will be frozen into their homes tomorrow, I’d provide a bit of reading material.

First and foremost, my new album is FINALLY under way.  I have my buddy Sammy K executive producing it.  Dude’s got a great ear so this should be my most cohesive project yet. The album is entitled Artificial Product. The target release date is March 7th.  13 tracks of greatness (I hope!). In the process of trying to find an 18+ venue to throw the damn release party.  Gonna do a listening party maybe a week before. (BTW, if I tag you in this on facebook, consider it an invite.) Small gathering, probably a wine and cheese affair. Because I’ve never thrown one.

This album has a decidedly hip-hop sound to it. It was absolutely a conscience decision to give it that sound.  Wanting to prove I can be creative within the constructs of this lovely culture we refer to as hip-hop.  Its difficult, because alot of things straddle the line between cheesy and real. And I’ll sacrifice my first-born before someone calls my music cheesy.  It is, however, probably the most depressing record I’ll ever make. Its turning into a real headphone album. Its extremely personal and revealing on so many different levels.  I hope people take something away from this album because this is literally my heart and soul as it is.
